The executive committee of the governing council found "clear and strong support from a range of constituencies for President Naylor continuing in his role," according to chair Jack Petch, while expressing his approval at the reappointment.
Naylor said he was "delighted and deeply honoured" at the announcement, conceding that there are still many aspects of university life he would like to continue to develop.
A former Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, President Naylor has been a faculty member at Toronto since 1988 completing terms as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and vice-provost (relations with health care institutions). He has also received recognition nationally, including officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Royal Society of Canada and is regarded as a global academic leader in health policy, having served as chair of the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health in 2003.
The reappointment allows President Naylor to continue to press on with the integration of his vision for the university laid out in the Towards 2030 strategic planning initiative.
The proposal has been met with some concern by students, notably surrounding the de-regulation of tuition fees, though it also includes the goal to move towards smaller class sizes.
