Last year, Selina Chignall actually did what so many U of T students talk about doing; she packed up her things and spent six weeks during the summer volunteering abroad. Using the Global Volunteer Network, a group based in New Zealand and recommended by Bill Gates, Chignall secured a position volunteering at an orphanage in Kenya. The work was hardly glamorous; Chignall did a lot of cleaning and peeling potatoes. "You can't help people by telling them what they need," She says. "You have to do what they tell you." In fact, she felt the benefit from her volunteering went both ways. "The kids were a powerful force on me," She says. "They taught me more patience, grace, humility and selflessness than anything else could have."
