On Friday, November 4th the North American Model United Nations (NAMUN) presented a benefit concert in the Cat's Eye featuring Debaser (http://www.debasertheband.com) and The Daybreak (http://www.thedaybreak.net). The concert was in support of The Stephen Lewis Foundation (http://www.stephenlewisfoundation.org) which is an organization that helps those in Africa suffering with HIV/AIDS.
"Every year at our conference we choose a charity to collect donations for and this year Stephen Lewis is on our board of advisers," said David Meyer, the Director of N.A.M.U.N. , when asked what factored into the decision of the charity. Meyer also feels that to throw social events for students who not only have a lot of schoolwork but are investing time in campus groups such as this one is important. Meyer also feels that at UofT we are part of a "socially conscious campus" after stating that "we (NAMUN) are having the highest number membership in years".
The abundance of charity concerts that appear not only globally, but locally as well, may leave show goers disenchanted to whether organizations really do get their message across. Luke Higginson of Debaser thinks that there's "no reason not to do anything when you can do it". Shoe (Sumon Mukherjee) of The Daybreak feels that concerts such as this one "raises awareness of important charity and student groups".
